Son of God – The Story Behind the Song
As a songwriter, there are moments when a song feels less like something you created and more like something you were given. “Son of God” is one of those songs for me.
This song came from a deep focus on the core message of the Gospel. Not just as a belief, but as something real and personal. Because of that, I wanted every word to point back to the truth of Jesus Christ—His death, His burial, and His resurrection.
At the center of this song is this passage:
1 Corinthians 15:1–4
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
This passage lays out the Gospel in a clear and simple way. For that reason, I wanted the song to do the same.
Writing with Purpose
When I started writing “Son of God,” I kept one goal in mind—clarity. I didn’t want complicated lyrics. Instead, I wanted something people could understand, remember, and sing.
So, the first verse speaks directly to what Jesus has done:
He’s the One
Who died so I could live
By His blood
He gave all He could give
Right away, the focus is personal. Jesus didn’t just die—He died so we could live. That truth changes everything.
Then, the second verse shifts to the cross:
At the Cross
The final deed was done
It’s His gift
That’s free to everyone
Here, the message is simple. Jesus finished the work. In addition, His gift is free. Anyone can receive it.
A Response of Worship
Once you understand the Gospel, the next step is worship. Because of that, the chorus is simple and direct:
Son of God
Prince of Peace
I bow down at Your feet
Holy and Righteous Lord
This is the response. We don’t just believe—we bow down. We worship.
Also, I wrote the chorus so it works in any setting. Whether you’re alone or leading a group, the words stay clear and easy to sing.
The Bridge – A Call to Believe
While the verses explain and the chorus responds, the bridge calls for action:
Trust in Him
Believe He’s alive
Risen from the dead
At this point, the message becomes direct. You must respond. You must trust. You must believe.
After all, the Gospel is not just information—it calls for faith.
The Sound and Feel
Musically, “Son of God” supports the message.
The song is in the key of B minor, which gives it a reflective tone. At around 72 BPM, it moves at a moderate pace. As a result, the lyrics have room to breathe.
Here are a few key elements:
- Energy: Moderate and controlled
- Mood: Reflective and reverent
- Production: Clean and focused (studio recorded)
- Feel: More for worship than performance
In other words, this is not a high-energy anthem. Instead, it’s a song meant for reflection and worship.
Why This Song Matters to Me
At the end of the day, everything comes back to the Gospel.
Without the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is no hope. However, because of Him, we have life.
That’s why I wrote this song.
I wanted to create something that points people back to that truth. Not just once, but again and again.
For Worship Leaders and Listeners
If you’re a worship leader, I hope this song helps you lead others in truth. The message is simple, and the structure is easy to follow.
On the other hand, if you’re listening on your own, I hope it becomes part of your personal worship time.
Either way, the goal is the same—to focus on Jesus.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, this song isn’t about me—it’s about Him.
The Son of God.
The One who gave everything.
The One who rose again.
And the One who is worthy of all worship.
